Julian Whiteley – Head of School
Julian has worked in a variety of schools in Europe, South America and Asia. He has been involved in the leadership and management of schools for over 20 years and most recently was the Head and CEO of the United World College of South East Asia, Singapore.
During his career he has been involved in the inspection, accreditation and governance of schools and is also a regular presenter at Conferences worldwide. He obtained his Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Cambridge University and an MBA from Nottingham University. In addition to his extensive experience of leading schools, he has served on the Board of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools, was a member of the International Baccalaureate Heads Council and the United World Colleges Council.
Julian and his wife, Buff, have three daughters. What spare time he has is invariably spent on the water, in the water or under the water such is his enjoyment of sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, swimming and scuba diving. Kite surfing is the next challenge, although both his wife and osteopath are somewhat sceptical.
Kanok Chupak – School Director
Kanok has a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Chulalongkorn University and started her teaching journey from Dulwich International College, Horizon Learning Centre, The Regent’s School and Shrewsbury International School in Bangkok.
She sees herself as a bridge of cultures, people and nations as she was anAFS International Exchange Student in Italy and, acting as a School Director, a Qualified Onesqua Accreditation Officer as well as being a UWC team leader who brings passion, enthusiasm and humour to empower the school’s community (students, staffs and parents) to achieve UWCT’s vision and mission.
Amy Franklin- Director of Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness
Dr Amy Franklin is was previously a professor at the University Of New Mexico in the Dept. of Psychology. She is an expert in Emotional Intelligence and Psychology and has worked extensively in the field of social and emotional learning in schools, particularly with three United World Colleges. Her children have attended UWCs around the world and she will be joined by her husband, Bob, medical doctor with a speciality in psychiatry.
Jaki Graham – Primary School Principal
An experienced IB PYP practitioner, Jaki holds a Masters of Teaching from the University of Sydney, Australia and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of NSW, Australia. She was a team leader at UWCSEA – East (Singapore) for a number of years. Jaki has been involved in a number of leadership roles in her career – in early learning centres and primary school environments at schools in China, Switzerland and Australia. Her background in Number Talks will be invaluable as we continue to implement this framework within the Primary school. She is passionate about Social Emotional Learning, Positive Psychology and Mindfulness, and enjoys running, pilates, visual arts and water sports such as sailing, scuba diving or SUPing. She is excited by the opportunity to become involved in water sports again- especially sailing as part of living here in Phuket.
Marshall Hughes – Secondary School Principal
Dr. Marshall Hughes was previously teaching a Masters degree course in Educational Leadership at Alexander College in Cyprus. Formerly, Vice Principal at Sha Tin College (one of the ESF’s more prestigious schools in Hong Kong) and an IB Diploma Examiner, he brings a wealth of experience. Marshall played hockey for both Hong Kong and Singapore and although now retired from the sport, still coaches hockey at UWCT. He is also a singer/musician and plays a range of acoustic instruments. He is hoping to promote more musical events at school this year through an Open Mic Club. Marshall also enjoys running (slowly), surfing (badly), travelling and reading.
Oliver Paulin – Boarding Houseparent
Previously a Houseparent at North London Collegiate School in Jeju, South Korea, Oliver has extensive experience working in leading boarding schools and has a sound understanding of both the MYP and DP. Oliver joins UWCT with his wife Valerie (French & Spanish Teacher) and children Leo and Laura. Oliver enjoys cycling, tennis, running, rugby and darts. He is a passionate linguist and a lover of sports. Together with Valerie, he also teaches classes in French, Spanish and English within the Secondary School.
